The Copper for Tomorrow CRC will develop mining and processing solutions across the copper value chain to provide a step change in both the economics and the sustainability of copper production, thus meeting both market demand and sustainability goals. The scope will include:
Green economics of copper production
– Understand the full cost of copper production
– Develop techniques for tracking and tracing the origin of copper
– Rank alternative mining and processing methods using green economics
– Determine the premium that sustainable green copper would attract
– Eliminate traditional mining using in place recovery technologies
– Efficient mining and processing of problematic ore types and sub-economic deposits
– Modularisation and scalability of copper production
– Zero-entry mining
-Improve flow sheet economics including capex and opex
Processing
– Copper processing without tailings
– Manage impurities in concentrates (such as U, Pb, Sb,As and Bi)
– Re-process existing tailings for value extraction
– Low water technologies (dry comminution and other unit operations)
– Reduce energy needed to produce copper
– Low and zero emissions processing
